In the 1990's, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) was frequently prescribed at the time of menopause
for the long term prevention of a number of diseases including heart disease. However, in July 2002, a
very large scientific study was published showing that the combination of estrogen and progesterone is
associated with a small increase in heart disease. Therefore, we no longer recommend estrogen/progesterone
therapy for the prevention of future heart disease. You and your doctor may still decide that HRT is
appropriate for you if you suffer from other types of problems such as severe hot flashes. This decision
needs to be made on an individual basis with your doctor.
